Scandinavian Departments
Hello. I have an inquiry. I've been learning German for the past 5 years, and recently I've began my journey into the world of other Germanic languages. At the moment, I have begun my study of Swedish; I find it to be an extremely interesting language, and very pleasing to the ear. I was actually wondering if anyone had a list of universities/colleges, in the United States, that have Scandinavian departments (offering Swedish or Norwegian). Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also. I've tried Google, and it's not very helpful. (16 sought. | Seek.) |

best bang for your ski buck?
So now that winter is here, i've decided to embrace the cold and look for a decent place to ski. It's been a long time since i slapped on some skis and hit the slopes, so i was wondering if there were any ski fans out there who could give their opinion on the best slopes (would prefer the Laurentians, but will be willing to try other places in the Townchips so in your opinion: a) where is the best place to ski overall
b) not outrageously overpriced
c) best place for night skiing
d) is not outrageously crowded and has the least amount of hillbillies/speed demons
e) are there places that offer ski/bus packages? I know mcgill has them but they are only for McGill students.
I used to go to Greyrocks and was heartbroken when they closed. Have been to Tremblant but it's too "shi shi" for me. Went to Morin Heights for the night skiing, but that was more than 10 years ago.
I have also heard there are some places on the south shore (mont st. bruno)?
And Happy Holidays everybody :-) (5 sought. | Seek.) |

A Russian term Hello! I have just discovered this wonderful community, and am positively squirming with delight at the chance to talk to others interested in language. However, my first question (probably the first of many) is about a Russian word. Don't worry, I know that this isn't a community for translators, but I read the community rules, and it said that questions related to a single language were okay, so I hope this isn't breaking a rule. It is a bit of an obscure question, and I have also paid a visit to a Russian-learners community, but am waiting to find out if they will actually let me join first! ( I'll put the question under this cut, as I fear I have rambled. ) (13 sought. | Seek.) |

Came across this interesting video
I don't recall seeing it posted here before, so I thought I'd put it up and see what everyone thinks. Personally, I think it's quite accurate, though only for a certain value of "Americans" because it reduces all possible accents down to one. Still, it's interesting. See what you think. On the subject of cleanliness and our streets...
This isn't a new, fresh or even remotely interesting topic, but it's one that's always worth reminding. Now, I can't speak for all areas of town, but in a neighborhood I travel through on a fairly regular basis, that is, the Village, I can't really understand why, and certainly can't begin drawing conclusions of my own but... Okay, let me put it this way: to you dog owners out there, do you ever imagine that because there's snow covering the streets and sidewalks, that it'll conveniently hide your canine's poop/turds/shit/refuse/by-products/inser t clever euphemism here? No, I'm serious, goddammit! You can't walk two blocks without seeing dog turds on the sidewalk! If it's like that anywhere else in the city, speak up and let us know! And to you bystanders and pedestrians (hell, the motorists too!), if you see a dog take a dump in the street and you can't tell if its owner has a bag at the ready, speak up!! Ask them. Make them feel bad. Call them out, shout, attract people's attention on them. Or, if you like having a dogshit-covered road system when spring shows its blissful face, just walk on by and give them the thumbs up. If you have a dog, it's your responsibility to pick up your dog's poop. And if you don't, it's OUR responsibility to rub your nose in it, just like you'd do to a dog if it pooped on your floor. I'm looking to have a couple dresses taken in at the bust, however i'm not looking to pay 25$ per dress. that's the price stitch it gave me and it seems ridiculously overpriced! however, i'm not used to this sort of thing so maybe i'm just being cheap? also, one of these dresses is "leather" so i'm aware it would cost more than usual...but please tell me you guys know of some place i can go! also, completely off-topic, but does anyone know of any places that can engrave money clips? i'm at a loss for this as well... Proper deep tissue massage therapists?
Oh Montreal. The most up to date information I found in the memories was http://community.livejournal.com/montreal/2840631.html from well over a year ago. I'm looking for a massage therapist in this fine city (downtown, Cote-des-Neiges, NDG, Outremont, Mile End, Rosement... so within that loop of the Metro really) who knows what she/he is doing in terms of deep tissue massage and is able to give insurance receipts. All of the massage places near me are rub and tugs, so I'm not sure where to go. Googling massage therapy can give me a ton of places, but no actual recommendations. Price isn't too important, I just want someone who really knows what they are doing. None of those little oily massages... (5 sought. | Seek.) |

Miles gloriosus
I'm currently reading with growing enthusiasm Skeat's Etymological Dictionary and, being a fan of Ariosto, was thrilled to find this word: RODOMONTADE, vain boasting. (F.-Ital.) 'Crites. And most terribly he comes off, like your rodomontado;' Ben Jonson, Cynthia's Revels, Act v. sc. 2. 'And triumph'd our whole nation In his rodomant fashion;' id., Masque of Owls, Owl 5. - F. rodomontade, 'a brag, boast;' Cot. - Ital. rodomontada, 'a boaste, brag;' Florio. A proverbial expression, due to the boastful character of Rodomonte, in the Orlando furioso of Ariosto, bk. xiv; called Rodamonte by Bojardo, Orlando Innamorato, ii. 1. 56. Said to be coined from Lombard rodare (= Ital. rotare), to turn about, and monte, a mountain. See Rotary and Mount (1). Question: Is this a word people actually use or is it very recherché? Would it be understood by people who are not into Ariosto? Zusatzfrage: Wie ist das mit dem deutschen Äquivalent "bramarbasieren"? Verständlich oder sehr gesucht? (23 sought. | Seek.) |

Hey guys,
You are all usually a wealth of information. I know there has been some posts here before about teaching in Quebec. I was told my my ontario university that last week, a inter-provincial trade agreement was signed, that indicates that all professions that have certifications would now not need to recertify themselves when moving between provinces. For myself, this would mean that if I get my Ontario Teaching Certification, I could teach in Montreal, and not have to jump through hoops. Anyone know where I can find this document or what department of government takes care of it? Thank you kindy, Christine. (1 sought. | Seek.) |

Club for people who like spicy food?
Someone told me about a club or society in Montreal for people who like really spicy food. Apparently, they meet regularly and sample seriously hot, spicy food and compare notes on recipes, ingredients, and good restos that will blow their palates apart. Has anyone heard of this club? Do they have a website or a number I can call for more info? Thanks! (4 sought. | Seek.) |

The Band: Bizi (Or Bizii) (Peas in Hungarian)? Heya everybody! This is a really obscure question about a really obscure band. I wish to know if there is someone who can translate the Hungarian webpage, second link down, into simple text for me; that is, also click on one of the song links and go to the webpage it directs you to, and translate that for me. (OR) I want to know if anyone can find me some music by the band Bizi(i), specifically a song called Tokyo dreams. The thing is impossible to find, and my girlfriend really likes the band, and I kinda want to get it for her as a Christmas present. Any help, or none, is appreciated regardless. I'm supplying links to help out any those who know the band. This Cd in particular is a pain: Bizi - Boom Boom Room (Promo) http://www.musicstack.com/my/item.cgi?item=8985071&seller=1805&media=12&next=600&date=10%2F15%2F2008http://mcrack.fw.hu/ (4 sought. | Seek.) |

Malay
Hi all, I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions for online resources (or offline books) for learning Malay/Bahasa Malaysia/Bahasa Melayu. The only free website I've found so far is this one, which I haven't poked through fully enough to really come to a conclusion about it, but, regardless, I like to have multiple sources so I can compare things. Resume/C.V. ideas and suggestions?
I am planning to maybe apply to some minimum waged jobs such as loblaws, iga, walmart and stuff like that. I have I have learned a little french and can speak it functionally (minorly). My resume looks really good in english and I asked some people to translate it to french, and I don't quite like it. Would it be okay if I just hand english resume to managers and tell them that I just moved here and need a job? In my resume should I write that I have beginner french? Everyone that I know has said it doesn't matter if it is in english or french. Also should I add in references available upon request? -My highlights are quite too descriptive, is that bad? tia (8 sought. | Seek.) |

French translation help?
Bonjour! A mission team from my church is very involved with some projects in Haiti, and they would like to be able to post their mission statement in English and French. They sent me the English version and the start of a French version, but they say it's very rough. My French is not up to this speed yet to check word choice and details of grammar, so I was wondering if anyone here could help? Merci beaucoup!
